Building a community for all ages

“I am thrilled that Glen Cove has been designated an Age-Friendly Center of Excellence!

The concept of an age-friendly community is a bottom-up, top-down approach to policies and planning that ensure everyone (regardless of age, ethnicity, gender or economic status) has access to a healthy, stimulating and supportive environment. It asks that every aspect of a community be enhanced – its built environment, its social networks, its economy, its opportunities for engagement – with the goal of improving the quality of life for all residents so that they can thrive as they grow up and grow older. The message is always “We’re in this together and let’s never forget how important it is to take care of one another.”

What I love most is when this idea transforms itself into a practical reality. Simple, inexpensive gestures like adjusting the timing of a traffic light allows older adults, people with disabilities and young parents with children to cross the street safely.”
